The Wheel of Time is a high fantasy series written by Robert Jordan, later completed by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan's death. The series is one of the most expansive and intricate in the genre, encompassing 14 books and a prequel. The story is set in a world where time is cyclical, with ages repeating themselves in a pattern known as the Wheel of Time. I try to avoid comparing ANYTHING within the high fantasy genre. Let's remember that this blog is directed to curious English students who want to benefit from the pleasure of watching a cool series, as well as from the vocabulary that I separate and select for them. For those who want to go IN DEPTH with the grammar, language structure, an extensive list of strange, sophisticated, relevant vocabulary, well, they should buy the BOOK, a Case Study that explains, for example, why archaic English is widely used in high fantasy series.

For starters, and because I mentioned it, here's an excerpt of The Wheel of Time series Case Study Book:

In high fantasy literature, including The Wheel of Time series, the use of archaic or ancient English serves several purposes:

1. Establishing a Sense of Timelessness and Tradition:

- High fantasy often draws from medieval or ancient settings, which are deeply rooted in a past that feels distant and mythical. Using archaic language helps to create a sense of timelessness, linking the story to an age-old tradition and making the world feel more ancient and steeped in history. This is particularly effective in a series like The Wheel of Time, where the cyclical nature of time is a core theme, and events are meant to feel like echoes of the past.

2. Creating a Distinct World:

- High fantasy settings are usually separate from our modern world, often with their own cultures, societies, and languages. Archaic English can help delineate this separation by making the dialogue and narrative style feel unfamiliar and otherworldly. This linguistic choice enhances the reader's immersion in the fictional world by subtly reminding them that the setting is not contemporary.

3. Conveying Formality and Social Hierarchy:

- In many fantasy worlds, social hierarchies are rigid, and formality is crucial. Archaic English often includes more formal address and complex sentence structures, which can reflect the ceremonial or hierarchical nature of interactions among characters, particularly in royal courts, among nobility, or within ancient orders like the Aes Sedai in The Wheel of Time. This use of language helps convey the characters' status, relationships, and cultural norms.

4. Evoking Epic and Heroic Undertones:

- The language of epic poetry and classical literature often influences high fantasy. Archaic English can evoke the same grand, heroic undertones found in epic tales like Beowulf or The Iliad. This adds to the epic scale of the narrative, making characters' actions and decisions feel more significant and weighty.

5. Building a Mythical Atmosphere:

- High fantasy often involves myths, legends, and prophecies. Archaic English contributes to a mystical and mythical atmosphere, making these elements feel more authentic and ancient. This is especially true when characters recite prophecies, spells, or ancient texts, which can sound more credible and resonant when delivered in a style that feels older and more enigmatic.
